Fatima, a hujjah upon the Imams?

A reader left a comment on one of the posts : "Before speculating something about the status of Syeda(as)keep this in mind, in authentic Hadees,Imam Askari(as)said that like we are Hujjat upon u,our Grandmother Fatima(as)is hujjat upon us"

This post will inshallah examine this claim in detail.

It is found in some contemporary books of a number of modern scholars, a narration attributed to Imam al Askari (as): "We are the hujjah of Allah upon His creation, and our grandmother Fatima is hujjah upon us."

So is this narration sahih (authentic), or a lie upon Imam al Askari (as) and a fabrication upon him?

What is its source?

No source for this hadith is found in the books of hadith, neither in the principle ones nor in the non principal ones, neither in the reliable ones nor in others (i.e. neither in some of the relatively less reliable classical books of ahadith). It is also not found in the books of fiqh, history or others. So after an advanced computer search in lexicons, we still did not find a source for it. Yes, this hadith is recorded in some latter books, and the first book among those (the latter books) is "Atib al Bayan" (Volume 13 Page 225), a a book of tafsir written in Farsi by Syed Abdul Husayn Tayyib.

A contemporary writer, he mentioned the hadith in the following manner: "Noble hadith attributed to Imam Hasan al Askari (as) that he said: We are the hujjah of Allah upon His creation, and our grandmother Fatima is hujjah upon us." He did not list the source from which he had quoted it, rather, he narrated it upon presumption and there is no sign that he had knowledge about its source and original sanad.

Those who then quoted this hadith from him

There was then an influx of some contemporary writers, obsessed with such fabrications, its propagation and passing it off as an established belief of the shias; relying upon this hadith and its like as if they are authentically established ahadith, definitely known to have been said by the Imam. These contemporary sources include

1- Maqamat Fatima al Zahra

It is written in its page 20, regarding Fatima and her being a hujjah on the Imams: "Since the ahlulbayt (as) are hujjah upon the creatures, so indeed their mother Fatima is a hujjah upon them, and this is what is declared by the hadith of Imam al Askari (as): We are the hujjah of Allah upon His creation, and our grandmother Fatima is hujjah upon us

Its source is the book Atib al Bayab which has preceded. And the author wrote extensively upon this hadith and its being a proof, and Fatima's being a hujjah upon the Imams; as if all the established merits of Fatima from the Qur'an and sunnah had disappeared so he had to resort to proving her being a hujjah upon the imams by using this fabricated hadith and its likes and daeef ahadith

2- Al Asrar al Fatimiyah

This hadith is mentioned in a number of places in this book.

On page 17 it says: "We know that it has been reported by Imam al Askari (as) that he said:  We are the hujjah of Allah upon His creation, and our grandmother Fatima is hujjah upon us. So here he quotes this hadith as if it is definitely established to have been said by the Imam, by using the words "We know that it has been reported". This is a display of audacity upon Allah and Imam al Askari.

And on page 37, he quoted this hadith, then said: "This hadith is considered among the important ahadith reported by Imam al Askari (as). So he alluded towards this hadith being conclusively established to be narrated from Imam al Askari, while in the footnote he listed the source to be Atib al Bayan which has already been mentioned

And on page 53 he mentioned the hadith without a source and said: "Established hadith from Imam al Askari"

And he referred to it on page 99 and listed the source Atib al Bayan, while he listed it on page 154, 265 and 410 without mentioning a source

3- Al Kawther fi Ahwal Fatima

It mentions it in Volume 1 Page 114, quoting it from the preface of al Alim Volume 11 Page 1 from Atib al Bayan.

And so then people started to quote this hadith in their sittings, groups and discussions on the internet etc as if it was a definitely established hadith, in fact some of them even consider it a mutawatir hadith.

Even if you declare these Ahadeeth as zaeef, still we have saying of our Imam al Asr(as) declaring her status as His role model. Role model can only be one who is better in station ,and honor. Here are the references :(الغیبۃ طوسی: ص286، احتجاج طبرسی: ج2 ص279، بحارالانوار: ج53، ص180 حدیث9) Imam(as) says that ''Daughter(as) of Rasool Allah(saww) is best role model for me''.So stop dying in jealousy ,or bughz e Syeda(as)

  2. I was just checking the authenticity of the narration. It may not be strictly in accordance with science of hadith. However, as anonymous has posted, Her Excellency Syeda Fatima SA being declared role model by none other than our Master Mahdi AS it is in essence commensurate to the meaning of the hadith in contention. Furthermore, no doubts in her being part of the Prophet SAWW itself makes her the hujjah upon aimmah.
